Topic: How Senior Levy Fund Boards assist and respond in emergency situations to help older adults

Presenter: Jamie Opsal, MoALSO

Description: The City of St. Louis Fund swiftly became involved to assist seniors to find alternative placement after a sudden nursing home closure right before the holidays. Hear how the City of St. Louis Senior Fund helped with placement and securing personal necessities for 75 older adults . We’ll hear other examples of how senior funds aide in weather related emergencies and other urgent needs in their communities.

Description: At this educational session, participants will hear about the current status of affordable and accessible housing for all Missouri communities from both an advocacy and legislative perspective. There will be a full update on the Housing Sub-Comittee as well as an update on the AARP Livable Communities effort and the various initiatives taking shape to make sure every person in MO has access to safe and affordable housing.

Description: Representatives from Operation Food Search and Empower Missouri discuss food security in the aging community, including challenges and opportunities. This will be an interactive meeting, and we will look to participants to help provide insights into the nutrition and food security of the communities you serve. The discussion will reference national figures on Missouri’s aging population that can provide some insight as additional resources are gathered.

Event Description: As our population ages, one of our greatest concerns is growing economic insecurity experienced by older adults. Community leaders, stakeholders, and citizens across Missouri interested in using senior levy funds to improve older adult services should consider joining this virtual info Session. During this presentation, attendees will learn more about senior levy funds and steps they need to take to be successful in placing this measure on the ballot. Attendees will learn how to use MoALSO’s Senior Levy Advocacy Toolkit, and will learn insights from counties that have adopted the levy.

  • Overview: Many senior levy boards across the state receive requests that far exceed what they collect. As a result board members have to make difficult decisions on what programs and services they can and cannot support to help older residents age in the community. The meeting went over:

    • The 30 bills in the General Assembly that have been introduced that, if passed, would reduce your senior levy funding significantly.

    • The need for each levy fund board to reach out to your senators in support of Senate Bill 15. the Missouri Property Tax Credit (aka Circuit Breaker) program.

Missouri State Plan on Aging

This plan is required by the OAA and addresses the needs of older Missourians with a focus on those with the greatest economic and social needs. The current plan runs through September 30, 2023. The new plan will run from October 1, 2023, through September 30, 2027. View the information sheet to learn more about the plan and how you can have a voice in the plan development.
